Seychelles and India on a trajectory to consolidate cooperation after MoU Signing
The Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of India further strengthened their bilateral relations with the signing of four memoranda of understanding (MoU) at a ceremony held at State House this morning coinciding with the official visit of Indian Prime Minister, Mr Shri Narendra Modi to Seychelles.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Joël Morgan and Mr Navtej Sarna, Secretary (WEST) in the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India signed the agreements in the presence President James Michel and Prime Minister Modi.
In total four agreements were signed. They are as follows:
1.Memorandum of Understanding on Renewable Energy Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Seychelles and the Government of the Republic of India, with the aim to encourage and promote cooperation in various renewable energy sectors, notably in the field of possibly bio-energy, solar energy including solar photovoltaic and solar thermal. The agreement also encourages the training of personnel across pertinent fields.
2.Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Seychelles and the Government of the Republic of India for Cooperation in the Field of Hydrography, which will deepen existing maritime cooperation between the two countries and ensure greater security and safety within our shared maritime spaces including future hydrographic surveys of Seychelles vast Exclusive Economic Zone.
3.Protocol between the Government of the Republic of Seychelles and the Government of the Republic of India on the Sale of Navigational Charts/Electronic Navigational Charts which will inherently serve to produce production of navigational charts and Electronic Navigational Charts, as well as the exchange of data and personnel with regards to capacity building.
4.Agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Republic of Seychelles on the Development of Facilities on Assumption Island aimed at further expanding our military cooperation for shared security and mutual assistance within the region.
The signing of these agreements represents Seychelles’ commitment in consolidating the Indo- Seychellois relationship, which will mutually benefit the security of both nations and has the added benefit of fully harnessing the potential of Blue Economy.
“The signing of these agreements is testimony to the longstanding friendship and historic ties shared between our two nations. These memoranda of understanding signed today are proof of the deep cooperation across an array of fields which will spur people centred development and demonstrates the good will and respect between the largest and one of the smallest democracies in the world. We value our partnership with India and look forward to consolidating our natural ties in the future,” said Minister For Foreign Affairs and Transport Joël Morgan following the singing.
Mr Morgan also noted that he was deeply appreciative of Prime Minister Modi’s engagement with Seychelles and honoured to receive him in our country- one which shares the same Indian Ocean and same destiny based in the principles espoused in the concept of the Blue Economy and sustainable development. “We are also grateful for the tangible assurances and assistance based on the MoU's given to the people and Government of Seychelles by the Prime Minister,” said Minister Morgan
