Seychelles recognised for achievements in Education

The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, Mr Kishore Singh, presented his mission report to Seychelles in October 2013, at the 26th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, during where he recognised the commendable strides that Seychelles has made with regards to the right to education,  stating

“the education system in Seychelles has followed an exemplary path for a small island developing state” and that “emphasis on equality in education has significantly addressed differences in achievements based on gender and race, creating a system which provides equal opportunity for all based on ability.”

Mr Singh’s report, whilst recognising Seychelles’ achievements also made recommendations regarding the areas of progress that Seychelles should concentrate on, including putting greater focus on technical and vocational education, improving professional status and social esteem of the teaching profession, and meeting social challenges and promoting social and personal education in face of social and behavioural problems among students.

In this view, Mr Singh stated that he was “very encouraged in his dialogue with President James Michel who has launched the Social Renaissance Programme. This programme is highly significant in embodying the concept of “humane development” which is enshrined in the Constitution of Seychelles”.

The Government of Seychelles, has taken note of the Rapporteur’s recommendations, and also recognised the Rapporteur’s acknowledgement of Seychelles’ expanding focus on the Blue economy, and that this focus must be incorporated into education schemes and policies in order to ensure that the new generation is empowered with the necessary competences to partake in this enterprise. The Government of Seychelles will continue a constructive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, as well as other UN Human Rights mechanisms, to advance the right to education in the country.
