Coast Guard welcomes arrival of purpose built Naval Vessel for Seychelles from China
The Seychelles Coast Guard has welcomed the arrival of a ‘Type 62 Class Gunboat’ into its fleet from the People’s Republic of China that will be refitted in Seychelles making it sea-ready in time to mark the June celebrations.
The naval vessel will be officially donated by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to President James Michel, receiving it on behalf of the people of Seychelles on the occasion of the Seychelles National day on June 18th. purpose
President James Michel met with His Excellency President Xi Jinping-(at the time Vice President) in 2011 affirming that Seychelles and China would boost and diversify their long-standing relations in the spirit of south-south cooperation creating a viable partnership between one of the smallest and largest countries in the world. The Naval vessel is testament to China’s pledge made at the meeting, to support Seychelles in maintaining security of maritime routes and fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean.
The arrival of the vessel expresses the excellent relationship shared between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Seychelles. The naval vessel will complement others already under the command of the Seychelles Coast Guard to further enhance Seychellois capability in patrolling and securing the nation’s vast maritime space. The new vessel is one of the most modern and technologically advanced in the Seychelles fleet.
Such cooperation demonstrates China’s continued commitment to Seychelles in its fight against piracy and in its vision of securitising the western Indian Ocean. The vessel will play a crucial role in maintaining the territorial integrity of Seychelles and will further establish the Seychelles Coast Guard as a leading proponent of peace and security in the region.
