16.07.2013

Seychelles will host the Preparatory Meeting for the Third Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) from the 17th to the 19th July at the Kempinski Seychelles Resort.

Delegations from the AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and South China Sea) member states of Cape Verde, Comoros, Guinea- Bissau, Maldives, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Singapore and the Seychelles are invited to develop and share their experiences as Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

“Seychelles is honoured to host, for the second time, an important gathering of our peers from the region for us to collaborate on establishing what the global agenda is for Small Island Developing States. It is an opportunity to share experiences and garner understanding of each others specificities within this grouping enabling us to support our collective development ambitions,” said the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam.

The meeting is expected to be Chaired by Professor Rolph Payet, Minister for Environment and Energy and discussions will be centred on the experiences of the regional countries in their application of the Barbados Program of Action for the Sustainable Development (BPASD) adopted in 1994. The BPASD consists of a 14-point program that defines the areas and priority challenges faced by Small Island Developing States. These areas include climate change and sea-level rise, national institutions and administrative capacity, science and technology, and human resource development.

Along side this regional gathering, the Seychelles Government will be hosting a special High Level Session on ‘ Emerging Opportunities and Building Partnerships’ (the Blue Economy) which will be lead by Mr. Peter Sinon, Minister for Natural Resources and Industry. Ministers and key representatives will be presenting and discussing the Seychelles Government’s plan for the environment and economy.

This special parallel session is aimed at showcasing Seychelles’ experience in advancing the concept of the Blue Economy and garner support for increased regional collaboration and partnerships in developing this sector.

The outcome of this meeting will be fed into the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in Samoa, in 2014.

Among the distinguished participants attending this meeting, is Mr. Vuk Jeremic, President of the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA).
