Seychelles-Sri Lanka Relations Boosted by New Areas of Cooperation
The Seychelles Government has today concluded the signing of three cooperation agreements with the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in a ceremony held at State House this morning.
The ceremony was witnessed by both the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. James Alix Michel and President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka to Seychelles.
“The Seychelles and Sri Lankan Governments have both recognised the potential for greater cooperation between are our two peoples, and it is with this in mind that we have been working tirelessly to create the necessary frameworks and opportunities for these mutually beneficial engagements to take place,” said the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam.
Minister for Home Affairs and Transport, Mr. Joel Morgan, signed an Air Service Agreement paving the way for the establishment of air links between the two nations.
The Minister for Education, Mrs. Macsuzy Mondon, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills establishing the framework for close cooperation in areas of vocational training and youth development. The MoU also outlines an annual leadership programme for 25 Seychellois youth in Sri Lanka.
Foreign Minister Jean-Paul Adam, concluded the signing of an MoU on Cooperation between the Seychelles Ministry of Defence and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence and Urban Development. This agreement allows for greater exchange of military delegations of all levels and exchanges in the areas of defence education and equipment and technical cooperation.
The Sri Lankan Minister of External Affairs, Professor G L Peiris, signed the agreements, on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government.
The new cooperation agreements signed are a culmination of on-going discussions between the relevant offices of the two Governments, which were initiated during President Michel’s State Visit to Sri Lanka in August 2012.
President Rajapaksa is undertaking a State visit to Seychelles, with a high-level delegation from the 29th June to the 1st July.
