15.04.2013

Seychelles and Egypt have today committed to increasing the existing bilateral cooperation with concrete steps following discussions held between Foreign Minister Jean-Paul Adam and Ambassador Mona Omar, the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt today.

Vice Minister Omar, who is on a short working visit to Seychelles, called on the Seychelles Foreign Minister and held in depth discussions on the potential areas of cooperation the two countries could explore.

“Our two countries are actively in increasing our engagement. We have discussed deepening our cooperation in the health sector through the provision of some Egyptian doctors and through trainings for personnel, but we have also discussed similar cooperation in other areas such as agriculture, tourism, policing, and energy,” said Minister Adam.

Vice Minister Omar said her visit to Seychelles has brought to her attention the vast areas of potential cooperation and that the Government of Egypt can explore with Seychelles, one example being in the area of luxury tourism. Vice Minister Omar added that promoting business and investment was also a priority and that the two governments will be signing Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements soon and exploring an investment promotion and protection framework.

As part of her visit the Vice Minister also made a special donation of medical supplies to Victoria Hospital in response to the disaster that occurred in Seychelles in January this year. Minister Adam said the Government was very grateful to Egypt, who were one of the first African countries to offer assistance to Seychelles in the aftermath of the devastation.

During her two day working visit the Vice Minister called on the Seychelles Vice-President, Mr. Danny Faure, at State House.

Minister Adam has said that the Government of Seychelles will be following up on these discussions with a working visit to Cairo forthcoming.
