Political Dialogue Meeting Between Seychelles and China

On 9th August 2018, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Barry Faure met with Mr. Chen Xiaodong, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, in Beijing for the 2nd Political Dialogue meeting between Seychelles and China.

During the meeting, Ambassador Barry Faure and Mr. Chen Xiadong discussed issues related to the excellent bilateral ties of cooperation between the two countries and deliberated on new collaboration areas which Seychelles and China will jointly pursue.

Ambassador Barry Faure expressed his gratitude for all the economic support that Seychelles has received from China throughout the years which has contributed towards the socio-economic and infrastructure development of Seychelles. He also reaffirmed the strong commitment of the Seychelles Government to the One China Policy.

On his side, Mr. Chen Xiadong reassured that China will continue to provide assistance to the development of Seychelles in various fields of cooperation and looks forward to deepen the political trust and people to people ties between the two countries.

He added that China appreciates the support of Seychelles on core issues of mutual concern and that amongst its various international pledges, China will uphold its strong commitment to the Paris Climate Change Agreement and other efforts that seek to safeguard the livelihood of Small Island Developing States like Seychelles.

Ambassador Barry Faure and Mr, Chen Xiadong also discussed the upcoming 2018 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit that will take place in Beijing between 3rd – 4th September 2018.

FOCAC has become the main mechanism that coordinates the bilateral cooperation matters and funding for projects between China and the African states. At the last FOCAC Summit which took place in December 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa, China announced its USD 60 billion cooperation plan for Africa.

During the aforementioned Political Dialogue, both sides also exchanged views on the reform of the Security Council of the United Nations. The Chinese Assistant Minister was also briefed on the upcoming chairmanship of Seychelles of the Indian Ocean Commission.

At the Political Dialogue the Seychelles Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs was accompanied by Ms. Vivianne Fock Tave, Seychelles Ambassador to China, as well as officials from the Seychelles Embassy in Beijing and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
