19th Summit of the COMESA Heads of State and Government in Madagascar

President Danny Faure is being represented at the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) being held in the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo, on 18th and 19th October, by Ambassador Claude Morel, Permanent Representative accredited to the organization. The theme of this year's summit is "Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization." 

The Summit was opened this morning by the President of Madagascar, Mr Hery Rajaonarimampianina, in the presence of a number of Heads of State, Vice Presidents, Ministers and other dignitaries from COMESA's 19 member states. In his opening address, the President stated that "sustainable industrialization will contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of our countries and bring shared prosperity". He was encouraged that "the COMESA region has registered the fastest economic growth rate in Africa, and that the region had known       
a significant increase in intra-regional trade". He called on COMESA to take into account the specificities of the island nations of the the organization in the development programmes being pursued, particularly regional infrastructure projects.

The summit is focusing on a number of issues concerning the organization's regional integration agenda. Of particular interest to Seychelles is the need to create strategic trade links, which includes establishing shipping lines, which will connect the key ports of island nations to the coastal countries of COMESA member states. The Summit is expected to approve a decision that a feasibility study be conducted by the COMESA Secretariat to assess the viability of establishing such regional shipping lines.

The Summit also considered the evolution of political developments in the region since its last summit in March of 2015. Concerning the elections in the COMESA region, the Summit "commended the people of Seychelles for exercising political tolerance and maturity that ensured calm during the electoral process and congratulated Mr Danny Faure  as the incoming President of the Republic of Seychelles".

The Seychelles delegation also comprises of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that of Trade who have been participating in meetings leading to the summit.
