INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION SEYCHELLES, 19th - 22ND AUGUST 2008
The Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Planning Bureau, Mr Andreas Moleskis, is to lead the Cypriot delegation to the First meeting of the Permanent Cypriot- Seychelles Intergovernmental Commission, which will take place from 19th to 22nd August in Seychelles.
Long before the establishment of diplomatic relations in April 1976, Seychelles and Cyprus had already enjoyed historical ties.
An Agreement on Long-term Economic, Scientific, Technical and Industrial Cooperation, signed in 1998 established a framework and first step towards formalisation of the co-operation between the two countries.
Among the provisions of this agreement was the setting up of a Permanent Cypriot- Seychelles Intergovernmental Commission which is to provide regular consultations and framework for exploring new and innovative areas of bilateral cooperation.
Over the past years, Cyprus has continuously provided assistance to Seychelles - notably through provision of scholarships in the field of tourism and environment.
The two countries also signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement in 2006.
The meeting is to discuss on how to fully exploit all opportunities based on existing possibilities in order to foster new partnerships between Seychelles and Cyprus, two islands facing similar concerns and challenges.
Regional and international issues of vital importance to both countries will also be raised.
A bilateral agreement in the fields of Education, Science and Culture as well as a Protocol on Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries are also expected to be signed during this session.» All news
