Cuban Ambassador bids farewell to President James Michel at State House

The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. Orlando Alvarez Alvarez, has paid a farewell call on President James Michel at State House this morning following a four year tenure, initially as Charge d’Affaires and later as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Seychelles.

President James Michel thanked Ambassador Alvarez for his tireless efforts to increase the level of cooperation between Seychelles and Cuba and highlighted the great personal contribution that the Ambassador has made whilst in Seychelles.

“Seychelles and Cuba have a longstanding friendship which has been solidified by your Excellency’s proactive engagement with the Government of Seychelles. Our two sister islands nations share a common vision for a better and more equitable future for our children. Seychelles commends Cuba for remaining resolute and steadfast in her principles. I wish you every success upon your return to Havana, said President Michel.”

Ambassador Alvarez spoke warmly of his tenure in Seychelles, saying that the country is unique and always made him feel welcomed. Ambassador Alvarez thanked President Michel for his Government's support of Cuba on key issues in international fora, most notably at the United Nations which has helped the cause of the Cuban people.

Cuba and Seychelles have numerous fields of cooperation exemplified by the health sector where the Republic of Cuba has throughout the years provided both technical assistance and support through the secondment of highly trained medical practitioners.

Seychelles and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1978. The Cuban Ambassador said that the relations have grown in strength since that time and are now stronger than ever and that he was confident that this will continue in the future.

Also present at the farewell call, was the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Mr Joel Morgan.
