Seychelles and Comoros Solidify Cooperation Framework

16.06.2015

The Seychelles Government has today concluded the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement with the Union of Comoros as a facilitating instrument for the deepening of relations between the two Indian Ocean Island States.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport, Mr Jöel Morgan, who signed the document on behalf of Seychelles in Sandton, South Africa in the margins of the 25th Assembly of the African Union, described the agreement as being about partnership between the two states:

“This document is an opportunity to develop the potential that exists between Seychelles and Comoros, particularly in the air transport, tourism, trade and fisheries sectors, as well build on our previous commitments to improve the connectivity of the Indian Ocean islands and develop our aviation links.”

Minister Morgan’s Comoro counterpart, the Minister for External Relations and Cooperation, Dr Abdoulkarim Mohamed, echoed his sentiments and described the signing of the document as a formality, which will allow the two states to build on long established excellent relations.

During their meeting, the Ministers discussed the fundamental importance of connectivity for isolated island states, as a necessary precondition to pursuing other avenues of cooperation and development.

The two Ministers also discussed their commitment to the regional body of Indian Ocean Islands, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), in particular the Vanilla Project for the collaboration of the IOC airlines aimed at improving regional air connectivity.

Present at the signing was the Seychelles Resident Ambassador in Addis Ababa and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mr Joseph Nourrice, and the Principal Counsellor in the Seychelles Embassy in Addis Ababa, Mrs Amanda Bernstein.

Minister Morgan is currently in South Africa accompanying the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr James Alix Michel, who is heading the Seychelles delegation to the AU Summit.
