ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF GOOD GOVERNANCE IN SEYCHELLES

A validation workshop for the draft 2007 Report, "Assessing the State of Good Governance in the Republic of Seychelles" was organized on Monday 18th February 2008 at the International Conference Centre, Victoria.

The objective of the workshop was for public, private and NGO stakeholders to collectively validate the report which will then be submitted to the UNECA.

This concluded Phase II, of the UNECA Project "Monitoring and Measuring Progress Towards Good Governance in Africa" which was launched in Seychelles in April 2007.

Phase II includes an update of the state of governance of the 27 countries who took part in Phase I, comprising of South Africa, Mauritius and Egypt to name a few, as well as an additional 9 new countries (Seychelles included).

This exercise has been carried out by StraConsult, a Mauritian-based consultancy firm with the assistance of local professionals.

Mr L. Amedee Darga from StraConsult, was facilitating this workshop in the presence of a UN-ECA representative, Mr Kaleb Demeska.

According to Mr. Darga, the results of an independent survey conducted by StraConsult places Seychelles at the very top in Africa in terms of good governance.

"Assessing the State of Good Governance in the Republic of Seychelles" will be a background document to the 2007 African Governance Report, the forthcoming UNECA report.
